Southern Wind 82 "Ammonite" Launched in Cape Town

Southern Wind recently celebrated the delivery of Ammonite, the third yacht in the 82ft. miniseries. Marcus Blackmore, Ammonite’s Australian owner, has long been a passionate sailor. Marcus wanted a yacht for racing and cruising with, in his own words, “a sexy body and a highly competitive soul.”

The yacht is both highly customized and the perfect combination of her predecessors: the cruising-oriented SW82 RS Feelin’ Good, which has sailed over 11,000 miles in 6 months, and the racing-orientated SW82 FD Grande Orazio, which has successfully claimed top honors in some of the world’s most important superyacht regattas.

Ammonite features a raised saloon with two hull windows on each side of the saloon, 270° panoramic coachroof windows and a transparent coachroof top window that bring a flood of light into the interior.

The yacht has completed her maiden voyage, a 7000 mile trip from Cape Town to Sardinia, where Ammonite is planning to race in the 2016 edition of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta in Porto Cervo in June. This prestigious race will actually only be a trial run in anticipation of the real competition Ammonite is planning to face at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, also in Porto Cervo in September.

After her Mediterranean summer, Ammonite will sail to the Caribbean together with the ARC fleet to continue competing in the prestigious Caribbean regatta circuit. But before she heads west, Ammonite will make a splash at the Monaco Yacht Show in September where she will have her world premiere.
