DETAILED OVERVIEW
The first yacht in the new series will have the low profile, raised saloon but the hull has been designed to also accommodate a larger volume deck saloon option with the machinery placed a bit further forward. The hull contains many features that are a direct result of applying the knowledge and proven benefits of the research and design of numerous high performance yachts (VO70’s, Open 60’s, and Leopard 3) over the last decade. Fuller waterlines and straighter diagonals in the ends, wider and lower transom and fuller forward sections are a direct transfer. The topsides have generally less curvature and the stern has been widened, to the point of nearly forming a chine, to increase the heeled sailing length and performance. The critical issue of rudder immersion in the upper range of typical heel angles is managed through the precise distribution of longitudinal volume to prevent stern lift.
The SW 82 exhibits the ease of handling and responsiveness of the helm that is a hallmark of the Southern Wind Shipyard yachts created through the collaboration of Farr Yacht Design and Nauta Yacht Design. The SW 82 is precisely balanced through the accurate placement of the rig and appendages and the longitudinal distribution of volume in the topsides ensures an orderly shift in fore and aft trim from upright through to the highest typical angles of heel to maximize performance and control. The keel and rudder are sized for efficiency and to provide a satisfying sailing experience. The size and sweep of the rudder blade is designed to deliver accurate, manageable loads to the wheel throughout the range of speed and heel.
The sailplan of the SW 82 is sized to produce good light wind performance and is matched to the stability of the keel to allow full sail to be comfortably carried to nearly 20 knots. The largest genoa sheets in front of the shrouds and is complemented by a staysail for sailing in strong winds. A moderately sized bowsprit is used for the gennaker flown from the masthead. The mainsail, genoa and gennaker are proportioned for high efficiency and ease of setting and trimming.
The SW 82 is an exciting addition to the SWS line incorporating many of the features and style of her bigger sisters.
