Designer’s Notes
This design is a development of the same concept as the 1 Ton Design No. 64, but relative to its size, Design 65 is beamier, heavier, and has more sail area to enhance performance in the light airs and sloppy seas of the 1977 World 1/2 Ton Title venue in Sydney, Australia. Design 65 is a very big 1/2 Tonner. It has 10 inches more beam, 1'3" longer overall, and 1'7" taller rig than Farr's previous 1/2 Ton Design No. 54. Design 65 was represented at the 1977 World Title by GUNBOAT RANGIRIRI, TWENTY TWO SIXTY NINE, and SWUZZLEBUBBLE. These boats finished 1st, 3rd and 5th respectively in a very competitive series off Sydney Heads. GUNBOAT's success was a triumph for a proficient crew headed by New Zealander Peter Walker. The design featured more upright transom, and clean hull lines with very little obvious rating distortion. Construction of GUNBOAT featured Kevlar reinforced in a sandwich panel - one of the first engineered applications of this technique and forerunner of much of Farr's development work in this form of construction.
