Designer’s Notes
Design #314 - IMS 47 The Farr IMS 47 design follows in the foot steps of the Farr IMS 46, NINETY SEVEN, line honors winner of the 1994 Sydney Hobart Race and IMS overall winner of the Asia Pacific Ocean Racing Series. Both designs will have a home in the ILC 46 class now formulated by the Offshore Racing Council. Like its predecessor, the IMS 47 can be re-configured for different conditions with adjustments to the trim, displacement, stability and sail area. It is being initially optimized, however, for the lighter and moderate air racing typical of European summers rather than the windier conditions for which the IMS 46 was targeted. Hanging in the balance when designing this yacht, was the ORC's anticipated decision to allow carbon fiber in rudder, and hull and deck construction. In fact, provisions were enacted to accommodate carbon, but not without varying degrees of penalty for its use.
