Designer’s Notes

Farr International, Inc. recognized strong demand in the marketplace for a 36-foot IMS racer and in a collaborative effort with boat builder Carroll Marine, Ltd. took the initiative to commission Bruce Farr & Associates, Inc. for a design.

Aimed for the new IMS Racing Division in accordance with the Offshore Racing Council's 1993 IMS regulations, the Mumm 36 will be a highly competitive boat configured for round the bouys and offshore racing with wide appeal due to its size and reasonable cost. This design provides the grand-prix racing owner with the competitive edge to win at the highest level of yacht racing, and the recreational competitor a highly economic performance package to win at local events racing under a variety of handicapping systems including PHRF and CHS in addition to IMS.

The Mumm 36 will have a target 1992 GPH rating of 606 seconds/mile and reflects the new IMS pedigree with the minimum interior accommodations required to meet IMS racing division regulations. Its design is influenced in particular by the success of the Farr IMS 40 (COOKSON'S HIGH FIVE, ASSASSIN) and Farr IMS 50 (MORNING MIST III, FULL CRY). The 36, 40 and 50 all share a long waterline length for length overall, light displacement, high stability and generous sail area. These features will stimulate impressive all round performance equivalent to many popular IMS yachts around 40-feet long.

The fractionally rigged sailplan has generous sail area and a mast both economic and efficient with respect to the new IMS estimated gyradius. The deck layout is simple and efficient and features tiller steering for excellent response to the helm. The triangular bulbed keel and the rudder are both highly advanced deep foils optimised in accordance with Bruce Farr & Associates, Inc.'s extensive tank testing and research to maximize efficiency.

Farr engineering will produce a light, rigid boat using E-glass laminates cored with PVC foam and balsa, and other reasonable cost materials to provide an exceptional value and excellent handicap utilizing the 1993 IMS construction credits.

With tremendous attention given to keeping building costs down and quality high, it is anticipated that the Mumm 36 will be enormously popular. This design offers versatility to the club-level recreational racing sailor, and an extremely competitive IMS racing boat to those planning a grand-prix campaign.
