Introduced in 1988, the Farr Phase 4 represents a sophisticated, lateclassic collaboration between legendary naval architect Bruce Farr and premium Australian boat builders. Officially designated as Design 178 in the Farr Yacht Design archives, this 39foot cruiserracer was engineered to bridge the gap between grand prix performance and comfortable, longdistance family cruising. Built primarily by Binks Yacht Constructions—a yard legendary in Australian maritime history for its pioneering fiberglass layups and exceptional structural standards—with some hulls completed or finished by Whitsunday Coast Yacht Constructions, the Phase 4 was conceived as an elegant alternative to the highvolume, massproduction imports of the era. Rather than compromising sailing characteristics for cabin space, the design prioritizes a slippery, easily driven hull form that remains fast, balanced, and highly competitive in twilight club racing, while providing a seaworthy, liveaboardcapable home.
